Stanford received a multitude of honors today, as the league's 10 head coaches voted and chose sophomore guard Candice Wiggins as the 2005-06 Pacific-10 Conference Women's Basketball Player of the Year and Tara VanDerveer as the Pac-10 Coach of the Year, Commissioner Tom Hansen announced today.
Junior center Brooke Smith was selected to the All-Pac-10 team. Forward Jillian Harmon was picked for the Pac-10 All-Freshman team, while Rosalyn Gold-Onwude was an honorable mention selection for the All-Freshman team. (More ...)

For this week’s “Talking with the Stars,” The Daily proudly presents two-time national champion women’s basketball head coach Tara VanDerveer.
The Stanford Daily: So you recently won your 650th game overall and your 500th with Stanford over 20 seasons. How have you built up the program and how have you kept it so strong? (More ...)
Tara VanDerveer has reached plenty of milestones over the past 20 years as the Stanford women's basketball coach, but even she admits her latest accomplishment will stand out.
Playing before a spirited crowd of 4,859, a Haas Pavilion record for women's hoops, the No. 14 Cardinal earned a 55-46 Pac-10 Conference win over Cal on Saturday to give VanDerveer her 500th victory at the school. (Article is no longer available.)

Gold-Onwude got her first crash-course in VanDerveer honesty two weekends ago in Los Angeles. The Cardinal had just dropped a game to UCLA and were down by six against USC. It seemed that nothing could get going offensively as the opposing defenses began playing a triangle and two, in effect nullifying junior center Brooke Smith and sophomore Wiggins offensively.
“She basically said, ‘If you can’t score, you can’t play.’” Gold-Onwude said. “‘The game is about putting the ball in the basket.’” (More ...)

Without much fanfare, coach Tara VanDerveer notched her 650th career victory -- 498 of those coming during her 20 seasons on the Farm -- to become the ninth NCAA Division I women's coach to reach that milestone. But what consumed VanDerveer more Saturday wasn't the landmark number but the game itself. (More ...)

. . . the coaching staff feels that the days when the rust will come off and Newlin will begin to dominate again are coming sooner rather than later.
“[Her skills are] there, there’s no doubt,” VanDerveer said. “In my mind, it’s like riding a bicycle. You might wobble a little bit at the beginning, but you just get back on there, and once you learn, she can do the things that we need her to do. (More ...)

10:15 a.m., four hours before game-time and senior guard Krista Rappahahn was already on the Maples Pavilion three-point line. She was practicing her shot for Saturday’s match against California, but Rappahahn’s routine of attempting more than 100 three-pointers is nothing unusual for her — she does it almost every day.

Just in case you had ideas that Candice Wiggins was in some kind of sophomore slump, guess again. The All-American guard was a one-woman wrecking crew Saturday night in Eugene when she lifted Stanford to a difficult win at Mac Court, where the Cardinal had not won since 2003. Her 37 points and 14 field goals were career highs, and her performance was every bit as big as the numbers suggest.

Now and then, in those ever-so-brief moments squashed into her women's basketball world, Stanford coach Tara VanDerveer stops the clock.
Not so much to regroup as to reflect. Even if ever so briefly.
"When I first took this job," she said on Friday, amid preparations for tonight's 7 o'clock Pac-10 Conference collision with Oregon at McArthur Court, "I was told it was a graveyard job."
That was 20 years ago. (More ...)
