Why JJ was dismissed

Michelle Smith, Fan House, takes no pleasure in reporting:

Stanford senior guard JJ Hones, who was dismissed from the Cardinal women's basketball team on Monday, was arrested on May 2 for driving under the influence, reckless driving, evading a police officer and resisting arrest on the Stanford campus. Read more...

Wyndam Makowsky, The Stanford Daily, writes that JJ was seen as widely important to Stanford's 2010-11 plans and asks, "Who replaces Hones? Not only must her play be accounted for, but so too must her leadership." Read more...

If this is the sole reason for her dismissal, I think this is an overreaction. She should have been disciplined in some way, for sure, not face a "zero-tolerance" response. Where is the help and counseling? It would be especially sad if this was the result of fear that likely donors would be turned off.

I agree that the complete dismissal seems like an over reaction, especially given that it's a golf cart DUI, not a car. Driving golf carts while buzzed is a staple of Stanford nightlife, especially for athletes who use them while injured as JJ is. Granted she seems to have compounded a bad decision with several more dumb moves when apprehended if the cops are to be believed, but it's sad to see such a hard working and resilient player cut off for a few juvenile decisions.

I do not believe it was an overreaction. She broke team rules and should be punished. Sad to see her go, but it's her own fault

Sad news for all. But a major mistake was made by JJ. She was an experienced member and leader of the team and knew better. Hopefully she can reflect and learn and mentor others about this experience.

If it was a men's player on a team would the punishment had been so severe? I think there should have been some consideration given seems hasty. I agree what about counseling? You have someone recovering from a severe surgery (not her first) and you expect perfect behavior? Come on - get real. It is easy to be a good coach when everything hums along - but how you handle the less than perfect situations says a lot. Maybe everything is not by the book Coach.

Not the first infraction unfortunately. :-( Best of luck to JJ. People make mistakes.

If it were a guy it probably would've been considered a prank. I hope she moves on quickly. sad to see her go.

I have always enjoyed JJ's play and this is a very sad loss indeed. I am sure there are many underlying reasons for her bad judgment that day, but it was still very bad judgment. I am tired of athletes getting away with whatever the infraction just because they are athletes. Hats off to Tara and Stanford for holding themselves to a different standard of behavior and accountability. Hopefully, JJ will recover well from this nightmare event and others will think twice before doing something stupid. Best wishes to JJ and I will up my donation to the team this year!

"Not the first infraction unfortunately."
Sounds like a smear to me.

It would be nice if people used their names . . . or at least a handle. At least a unique handle would make it easier to differentiate between all the anonymous posts

Geno and I want to know... Would Tara and Stanford hold themselves to this same standard of behavior and accountability if Nneka or Kayla committed the same infractions? I think no.

It is interesting that people judge the appropriateness of the penalty without knowing more than a small amount of what has gone on. We all know that the coaching staff would not take this lightly and it must have been a gut- wrenching decision. Anonymous #1 asks "where is the help and counseling?" with no idea what has gone on. It really is not our place to judge with the little info that we have because we don't have (nor should we have) the complete story. Personally, I feel bad for everyone--JJ, the coaches and the team.

I couldn't agree more with Dana's post. I've followed the team since the late 1980s and have seen nothing but integrity from the program.

However, taking JJ off the Stanford athletic site's rosters (alphabetical and numeric) for the 2009-10 season is, at a minimum, incorrect. JJ was, indeed, very much part of this past year's team.

If this was John Wooden making the decision would you be questioning it? Of course not. He's the greatest basketball coach of all time.

Bill Walton (who was the most valuable player in the country) often tells the story of the time he told John Wooden that he had a right to wear his hair long - against Wooden's rules. Wooden said "Yes - you have a right to wear your hair long and that the rest of the team and I will miss you" from being a part of the team. Walton jumped on his bike and rode as quickly as he could to the nearest barbershop and back to practice.

I'm sure it was a difficult decision for Tara - she took over a week to make it - and we need to trust her. She has earned that right given her tremendous experience, wisdom, and coaching not only Stanford but the National Team to such incredible success.

I think Tara has it right - just as John Wooden had it right to make the best decision for the team - today and for the future.

We have always liked JJ and thought she had the potential to be one the keys for the team's success. One of the saddest times in our supporting our team for over 15 years was when JJ went down against Rutgers.

What JJ did was very different from Bill Walton's hair. JJ knew the rules of the team and the school and unfortunately, she made the series of decisions she did that brought the consequences. I hope JJ will learn in life that she is responsible for her actions - not only to herself but to those around her.

We do wish JJ all the best. We hope she can turn this event into something she can learn and grow from.

Now the team needs to move on and we need to rally around and support them. We have a National Championship to win next year.
