Senior guard Candice Wiggins (San Diego, Calif.) has been named the United States Olympic Committee's Athlete of the Month for July, the USOC announced today. Wiggins was honored alongside distance runner Alan Webb and the U.S. softball team.
Wiggins was honored following a busy month of July which saw her lead a pair of U.S. teams to gold medals at the Under-21 World Championship and the 2007 Pan-American Games. At the Under-21 World Championships in Moscow, Russia, she averaged 13.1 points a game, including a 30-point effort in the U.S.' opening contest that fueled a come-from-behind 90-88 victory. Wiggins paced the U.S. in the medal round as well, scoring 27 points in a semifinal win over host Russia, then adding 14 points in the gold-medal clinching 96-73 win over the Australians.
Immediately following the triumph, Wiggins joined the Pan-American Games team in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. She scored 10 points in the United States' tournament-opening 95-41 win over Colombia, and turned in a strong performance in the tournament as the U.S. went a perfect 5-0 and struck gold with a 79-66 victory over Brazil in the gold-medal game.(More ...)
