Cardinal wins a nail-biter

It was reported that Lady Bears came to Hawai'i to have some fun. They didn't find much at the Stan Sheriff Center this afternoon.

The Cardinal took an early lead and pulled ahead of the Lady Bears by double digits late in the first half. A 16-3 run by the Lady Bears cut the Cardinal's lead to two points by the end of the half.

The score stayed close throughout the second half. The Cardinal were ahead by one point on their last possession with 10 seconds left to play. Toni was fouled and extended her fans' anxiety by making just one of her free throws.

Then the icing was spread on the Cardinal cake — Brittney Griner missed her jumper, Chiney grabbed the rebound, Cardinal won 71-69!

The game was characterized by really tough defense on both sides. The Lady Bears took the Cardinal deep into the shot clock often, but the Cardinal's sharp shooting prevailed. They drove to the basket past the Lady Bear defenders or shot from the perimeter, where they made 50% of their attempts:

  • Taylor hit 4 of 6 and scored a total of 16 points.
  • Joslyn hit 2 of 3 and scored 11 points.
  • Chiney attempted the first three-pointer of her career five minutes into the game, and it dropped in as the buzzer sounded. She ended with the team-high 16 points and also grabbed eight rebounds.
Toni and Amber took turns running the point, and both did a fine job although the Lady Bear defense didn't allow many assists. Toni scored 15 points and Amber scored nine.

Mikaela started and played for 30 minutes, during which she did an awesome job of controlling Brittney Griner (ably assisted by Jos, Taylor, Bonnie, and/or Chiney). Brittney responded to the double- and triple-teaming in the first half mostly by passing the ball back out. But she took her shots in the second half and ended with 22 points, six rebounds and one blocked shot. Mikaela is definitely back as a key member of the team — she also grabbed the game-high 12 rebounds.

Bonnie says she's been working hard on defense, and it showed this afternoon. She took only one shot, but she pulled down five rebounds.

The Lady Bear's offense took a hit five minutes into the game when Odyssey Sims pulled up with what looked like a hamstring injury (she was clutching the back of her thigh). She did not return to the court.
