Cardinal shoots the lights out in Tucson

The Wildcats brought their 'A' game against the Cardinal, but it was good enough for only about ten minutes before they began to fade. They were outplayed and outscored 96-52.

The Wildcats fielded only eight players tonight — five of them played about 30 minutes. The effort was there, but it wasn't nearly enough to deny Chiney in the post and most of the other Cardinals beyond the arc.

The Cardinal 3-point shooting was sensational! Karlie (4), Bonnie (3), Taylor (3), Amber (2), Sara (1), Lili (1), Kailee (1) made 15 treys, just short of Stanford's all-time single-game record of 16 (made once in 2001 and again in 2002). The team made 63.5% of its field goal attempts — 46.9% of the 3-pointers.

Working hard on the inside, Chiney made 12 of her 13 field goal attempts! That's 92.3%, which puts her in a tie with Jayne Appel for fourth place on the Stanford individual single-game record list. (Heading the list is Kim Kupferer in 1981 and Louise Smith in 1979 & 1981.)

Those 24 points up her career total to 2231 — 261 more would take her past Nneka to second place in the Stanford all-time scoring list. At her current rate, that would take 10 more games — to the penultimate weekend of the conference season.

Karlie did more than shoot threes tonight. She also scored on a mid-range jumper and a lovely back-door cut for a total of 16 points. And she tallied three assists (two of them to Bonnie) and a steal.

Much of the Cardinal scoring tonight resulted from fine ball-handling. The team tallied 28 assists on its 40 field goals. (That's a lot — the Stanford all-time high is 37).

Amber dished out eight of them, and committed no turnovers. Her assist/turnover ratio is now 3.28, which (as of yesterday) is in the top ten in the nation. She also scored eight points and had a rebound, a block and a steal.

In only 15 minutes of playing time, Lili took seven shots and made five of them. She was the Cardinal's third double-digit scorer with 12 points. She also had six assists with just two turnovers.

In other Pac-12 action today, WSU extended its winning streak with a 70-60 win over Colorado, USC moved into third place with an 81-60 win over OSU, and ASU beat Cal 68-59 and moved up to fourth place. The game on Monday won't be a stroll in the desert for the Cardinal.
