The game started almost on time this week. South Bay fielded six players (Bird and five guards); Mission Rec had the advantage of nine players and more height.
Summer basketball is not good basketball, but it's very competitive and sometimes unexpectedly exciting.
Mission Rec took the opening tip and control of the game for quite a while. They played better as a team than is usual for the pick-up action at Kezar, and all their players were capable scorers. But South Bay didn't let the game get away; they stayed within 10 -15 points of Mission Rec. The score was 35-25 at the end of the first half.
Bri had played all 20 minutes of the first half; Bird and Kish and the other three South Bay players (player names were not announced) each got a few minutes of rest on the bench.
South Bay came back strong after the break with manic defense that forced a lot of Mission Rec turnovers. South Bay slowly cut into Mission Rec's lead and were behind by just five points (55-50) when Bri fouled out with about eight minutes left to play. A minute later, the Mission Rec coach protested a call with excessive enthusiasm and was called for a Technical. South Bay took its first lead (56-55) on the ensuing free throws.
The score was tied 66-66 with a minute left to play and 68-68 at 19.1 seconds. Mission Rec scored on its next possession. South Bay had the ball with 3.2 seconds left to play, but missed a last desperate shot, so lost 68-70.
I kept score only for the Stanford players ‐ Bird scored 26 points, Bri had eight and Kish had five.
