Jayne for Player of the Year?

Graham Hays (ESPN) guesses that the race for national player of the year will come down to Maya Moore (UConn sophomore forward), Renee Montgomery (UConn senior guard), and DeWanna Bonner (Auburn senior guard). Close enough to make late pushes are Ashley Walker (Cal senior forward/center), Courtney Paris (Oklahoma senior center), and Angel McCoughtry (Louisville senior forward).

But while taking a closer look at some Pac-10 stats for Walker, Jayne's name kept popping up. He found out that :
  • Jayne is one of the best distributors in the country. Among Hays' six POY candidates, Jayne is second only to point guard Renee Montgomery in assists and assist-to-turnover ratio.
  • Hays did not include in his analysis that although Jayne is not one of the nation's top scorers, she has a better field goal percentage than any of the candidates.
  • Although not the most prolific rebounder in the nation, Jayne is second only to Courtney Paris among the six candidates.
  • Other post players may be more dominant or more explosive, but Jayne has the most complete post game out there.
He concludes, "... if Appel finishes conference play the way she has started, don't count her out." Read more...

Here are statistics for Jayne and the six other candidates, with their relative rank in parentheses following each statistic.
