The Cardinal tames the Lions

The Cardinal defeated the Vanguard Lions today 100-54, pretty much as expected of an exhibition game.

The Lions are a scrappy good-shooting team. Their seven players fought hard right to the end, but couldn't match the Cardinal in size or skill.

There was a lot to like about this game for Cardinal fans:

  • Do you like three-pointers?

Watch Lindy and Bonnie. They each sank five of ten, several from way-y-y beyond the arc, and shared the top scoring honor with 17 points apiece.

  • Do you like fast play, great ball-handling and pesky defense?

Watch Amber and Jasmine. They alternated at the point for most of the game and ran the Lions ragged. They both stuck close to their opponents with nimble in-your-face defense. Neither scored, but they did everything else expected of a point guard.

Amber, who earned a starting position, had six assists with no turnovers. She jumps surprisingly high under the basket for someone who's just 5'7" and grabbed eight rebounds. Jasmine had three assists with no turnovers and three steals.

  • Do you like wow moves under the basket?

Watch Nneka and Chiney, of course. But watch Joslyn and Erika too, who made some Ogwumike-like layups, put-backs and rebounds. Joslyn came off the bench and played for 23 minutes, scored 15 points on 45% shooting, and had eight rebounds. Erica made some great moves too as she scored six points and grabbed six rebounds.

  • Do you like a calm, capable forward?

Now that Kayla's gone, watch Taylor. The, to quote Tara, "college-ready freshman" earned a starting position. She took her shots today — scored ten points on two three-pointers and a couple of nice layups.

  • Do you like dependable free-throw shooting?

The team made 80% of their attempts today.
