Next up: The Scarlet Knights

After a couple of entertaining exhibition games, the Cardinal plays its first this-one-counts game of the 2010-11 season on Sunday against Rutgers.

If you're a Stanford student, come to Maples early to get your free WBB tank top and eat free BBQ from Jimmy V before the game. Everyone:

Stay in Maples after the game and move to the section behind the Stanford bench for the first "tent" of the season. Which freshman will give the first "Oh, I forgot to tell you ..." five-minute talk? I'm betting it's Chiney.

Tara and C. Vivian Stringer go way back, to a game in 1985 when 22,157 people watched Ohio State (coached by Tara) play Iowa State (coached by C. Viv). Since then, they have coached against each other, Stanford vs Rutgers, six times — Stanford has won the last five contests.

The Scarlet Knights lost last season's leading scorer, Brittany Ray, to graduation. They return three starters from a team that finished with a 19-15 record and lost in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.

Their probable starters for Sunday's game are:

#1, 5'9"' redshirt junior guard Khadijah Rushdan will lead the way for Rutgers. She led the team in assists (3.6 per game) last season, but also had the most turnovers for an assist-to-turnover ratio of 0.98. She also led the team in steals (1.8 per game) and ranked second in scoring (9.0 ppg).
#11, 5'8" junior guard Nikki Speed contributed 3.7 points, 2.7 assists and 2.3 rebounds per game last season.
#24, 6'0" junior guard/forward April Sykes contributed 5.6 points, 1.2 assists and 3.5 rebounds per game last season
#44, 6'2" sophomore forward/center Monique Oliver had the best shooting percentage (.608) last season and was fourth in scoring (5.8 ppg).
#52, 6'2" junior forward Chelsey Lee was the leading rebounder (7.2 rpg) and third leading scorer (7.2 ppg) last season.
On the rather short bench are:
  • #3, 5'7" sophomore guard Erica Wheeler
  • #10, 5'7" sophomore guard Brittany Lapidus
  • #12, 5'10" freshman guard Daisha Simmons
  • #21, 6'1" freshman forward Briana Hutchen
