NCAA Round 1: Cardinal advances past Aggies

Stanford began its journey to Indianapolis with a decisive 86-59 victory over a very good UC Davis team.

The Cardinal had a 10-point lead nine minutes into the game, and the Aggies kept the score at about that for the rest of the half. The Cardinal put the pedal down in the second half and gradually pulled away, but the Aggies played a game to be proud of right up to the final buzzer.

It was a fast-paced, exciting game with quick defense and lots of long shots from both sides. The Aggies sank a total of six three-pointers. Lindy had four, Jeanette had three (just six more for the Stanford single-season record!), Kayla had three and Toni had three.

There was lots of action in the paint too — mostly from the Cardinal, who out-rebounded the Aggies 33-19. Nneka scored the game-high 22 points and had seven rebounds. Chiney, with 10 points, was the sixth Cardinal to score in double digits.

If there had been a mascot dancing contest, Gunrock, the Aggie mustang would have won hands down. He kept the 6500 fans entertained with his great moves.

The other game at Maples today, between the #8 Tech Lady Raiders and the #9 St. Johns Red Storm was something else entirely — spirited, but slow and clumsy. The Red Storm won 55-50, so will play the Cardinal on Monday night.

In other games of interest to Cardinal fans:

  • #3 UCLA won a close game against #14 Montana, 55-47.
  • #7 Arizona State was upset by #10 Temple, 63-45
  • #11 Gonzaga upset #6 Iowa 92-86 and will play UCLA in the second round
  • #15 Utah lost to #2 Notre Dame 67-54, but gave them a very tough game. Utah was behind by just five points with eight minutes left to play. Michelle scored ten points and had 16 rebounds.
