Cardinal toughs it out against the Trojans

It was too close for comfort in the first half. The Trojans' offense was hot — they outshot the Cardinal by 10% and out-three-d them by 20%. But the Cardinal made all ten of their free throws and didn't let the game get away. They ended the half two points ahead.

The Cardinal began the second half with a 12-2 run. The Trojans had cut the lead to five when Tara drew a T for objecting vociferously to an offensive foul called (mis-called?) on Toni. Stefanie Gilbreath missed both free throws and that was pretty much that. The Cardinal gradually extended their lead to an eventual 78-64 victory.

Trivia question (I don't know the answer — leave a comment if you do): When did Tara last get a technical foul?

Jeanette sank five of nine 3-pointers and led the scoring with 19 points.

Ms Do-Everything Pedersen had 17 points, eight rebounds, five assists and two steals.

Nneka sprained her ankle about five minutes into the second half and had to leave the game. Before that, she scored 11 points — her 35th consecutive double-digit score — and grabbed six rebounds.

Chiney scored 13 points (all in the second half), and had six rebounds, a block and a steal.

The bench contributed 14 points, nine rebounds and 59 minutes of very good play to the victory.

Toni was especially effective. She played the point for 23 minutes, hit a huge 3-pointer that broke a tie score halfway through the first half, and scored twice more with her signature one-handed scoop shot.

Joslyn was a strong presence in the paint. She also made the Cardinal's seventh 3-pointer.

I think Tara's last technical was at Maples about two years ago in a game against ASU. Tara rocketed off the bench onto the floor when a Stanford player was very roughly attacked near the basket at the Stanford end. Tara apologized to the FBC after the game, adding it had been years since her last technical and that the total for her career was very low.

Tara said in the press conference that she could count on one hand the number of technicals she has received in her career.

Jacki Gemelos was the player who missed the two technical foul shots.

"VanDerveer received a technical foul after coming onto the floor with 5:06 before halftime following a hard foul by Westerberg that sent Smith to the floor after the ASU senior missed a shot."

It was 30 December 2006. Emily Westerberg fouled Brooke Smith. As noted, Stanford Director of Women's Basketball VanDerveer 'rocketed off' (I usually say 'charged onto', but hey, tomato/tomato), the court after Westerberg put Smith on the floor.

While Director Tara did apologize, she also used the word 'whiplash' and the phrase 'no place in basketball' for that type of play. And, that is probably as harsh as Tara will EVER speak of opposing players.

Fantasy Kodak Moment: What if Bobby Knight was the Stanford coach at the time . . .

From Michelle Smith's report of the ASU game:

"Things were so off-kilter for Stanford that Cardinal coach Tara VanDerveer picked up only the third technical foul of her career (and her first since 2001) when ASU's Emily Westerberg fouled Brooke Smith hard under the basket with 5:06 left in the first half."
