  Cal Poly Mustangs

Cal Poly, which is located in San Luis Obispo, plays in the Big West Conference.

The Mustangs are coming off their best season ever. In 2012-13, they finished second (to Pacific) in the Big West with a 21-11 overall record, won the Big West tournament and went on to the NCAA tournament for the first time. There they lost to #3 seed Penn State in the first round.

The Mustangs return three key starters — Schlemer, Ervin and Elegado. They were picked to finish first in the Big West this season. They have begun with losses to two strong teams (Duquesne and DePaul) in the Maggie Dixon Classic.

Under the guidance of head coach Faith Mimnaugh for 17 years, the Mustangs have won more than 50% of their games in each of the past five seasons. They have a new assistant coach this season – former U-Dub standout Mackenzie Argens, who figures to improve the Mustang defense.

The Mustangs and the Cardinal haven't played each other since 1980.

The Mustangs with the most playing time (and the likely starters) are:

  • #43, 6'5" senior center Molly Schlemer was the Big West Player of the Year and the Big West Tournament MVP last season. She led the Mustangs in scoring (13.3 ppg) and rebounding (7.1 rpg). She made 54.2% of her field goal attempts (tenth-best in the nation).

  • #2, 5'3" redshirt senior guard Jonae Ervin runs the point for the Mustangs. She averaged 4.3 assists per game with an assist/turnover ratio of 2.61 (fourth-best in the nation). Her assist/turnover ratio in 2011-12 was 2.67 (the best in the nation). She also contributed 8.1 points per game last season.

  • #5, 5'6" junior guard Ariana Elegado started in every game last season. She was the Mustangs' second-best scorer (12.0 ppg) and best 3-pt shooter. She took more than half her shots from beyond the arc and made 38% of them.

  • #4, 6'4" redshirt sophomore forward Maddison Allen is from Australia, where she played in the Queensland U20 team. She missed most of last season with a hand injury. Coach Mimnaugh says she might be the best post defender she’s ever coached.

  • #11, 5'8" junior guard Kristen Ale is an outside shooter and ball handler who came off the bench last season for about ten minutes per game.

Here are Cal Poly's season statistics and roster.

  UC Davis Aggies

The Aggies also play in the Big West. They finished seventh (of ten) last season and have been picked to finish sixth this season. They've begun the season with two losses, but by just nine points to USC and eight points to Pacific.

We're getting to know the Aggies as well as we do our conference opponents. We've played them every season since 2007 when Hannah was a freshman.

The Aggies are a very young team. They have just three players with more than one year of experience at Davis — star junior forward Sydnee Fipps, senior reserve forward Idit Oryon and redshirt junior forward Brianna Salvatore, who sat out most of last season after an injury. They return two other starters — sophomore forwards Celia Marfone and Alyson Doherty.

The Aggies with the most playing time so far this season are:

  • #14, 5'10" junior forward Sydnee Fipps was named to the All-Big West First Team last season and to the Big West Preseason All-Conference Team this season. She has started in every game of her college career. She led her team (and ranked second in the league) in scoring last season with 17.1 ppg. She also had the best field-goal percentage (0.443) and the most rebounds (5.1 rpg).

  • #44, 6'3" sophomore forward Alyson Doherty was named to the Big West Conference All-Freshman team last season. She started in 27 of 29 games. She averaged 5.3 points and 4.9 rebounds per game.

  • #20, 6'0" sophomore forward Celia Marfone started in 24 of 30 games last season. She averaged 5.3 points and 4.0 rebounds per game.

  • #23, 5'9" sophomore guard Molly Greubel came off the bench last season and played more than 20 minutes per game. She averaged 6.3 points, 1.6 assists and 2.1 rebounds per game.

  • #33, 5'10" junior guard Kelsey Harris transferred from Iowa State and sat out last season.

Here are the UC Davis season statistics and roster.
